Boston Interior Design: Creating Beautiful Bedrooms
Donna Terry, an accomplished interior designer and proprietor of Boston Design and Interiors, Inc. has been creating beautiful bedrooms for many years. From large bedroom retreats to smaller guest bedrooms- they are personal and functional and represent the desires of the clients whether it is for themselves, their guests or their children.
Interior Design Project on the North Shore of Boston
This Master bedroom suite in a large North Reading home was designed for a busy executive couple with three small children. This sitting area is the new view from the bed. Implementing the space plan required some renovation in order to satisfy the new room arrangement which would face the bed towards the fireplace rather than the master bath.
This was a fairly new home of 6,300 square feet and though the bedroom was spacious it clearly lacked continuity in architectural detailing, had a misguided focal point, and incongruous proportions.
Interior Designer Tip: Don’t be afraid to remove what appears to be a feature if it precludes you from a better end result.
In order to extend the length of the wall that the new bed would now rest upon, we needed to alter the entrance to the bedroom by removing the double doors and framing out a new single door instead. This allowed us to create a new focal point from the position of the bed- the fireplace. As part of the planned renovation it was given a greater architectural presence in the room. We removed the traditional mantle and designed a new custom mantle in a transitional style with cleaner lines veneered in wenghi. The breast plate of the mantle was fabricated to include a recessed tile inlay of crushed glass in amethyst to pick up on the luxurious fabric of linen and cut velvet used for the custom window treatments. The walls surrounding the fireplace were then papered in a woven grass cloth to provide texture and visual interest against the other painted walls. The chandelier is handmade out of cocoa beads in a three tiered design to provide not only illumination but visual weight to the ceiling.
This renovation also included replacing the Master vanity, lighting, and the addition of tile in the Master Bath. To see more, please explore our photo gallery on our site.
Interior Design Project Weston
This 10,000 square foot home in Weston had its own children’s wing separate from the adult quarters. The round room pictured above sat off the girl’s wing. There was a similar lay-out for the boy’s wing. This room was wallpapered in a pale yellow strie and an embroidered butterfly pattern adorned the window treatments. Donna Terry had a sky painted on the domed ceiling by a faux artist with butterflies that matched the motif on the fabric exactly. Custom tufted arm chairs with smaller than average proportions for the children were upholstered in a blue velvet with light gold cording. A tufted ottoman with bullion fringe lightened up the group setting which sat upon the client’s Persian rug.

The younger daughter’s room was arranged with two beds- one for her daughter and one for anytime her daughter had a friend sleep over.
With beautiful bones –this room took on an air of pint-sized sophistication when dressed in well-tailored textiles and wallpaper. The client’s desire to change the colors of the dust ruffles and duvet covers in different colors and patterns on a weekly basis served as the inspiration for the rooms color palette.
The interior design scheme called for beautiful fabrics- embroidered linens , organza, and luscious rouged velvets- to be used throughout the room. The wall treatments consist of a sophisticated mix of bold colors and highly saturated hues on the French inspired wall paper, faux finish and paint combination.
A custom window seat was fabricated with cabinets to house loads of toys and the doors were milled to mimic the routed motif seen in the dresser.
Interior Designer Tip: Window seats can provide wonderful storage provided the inside cavity is easily accessible. Addressing the best way to do this should be to be a part of the initial design concept and drawings based on the client’s needs. View more Built-ins here
For her older daughter, her client wanted the room to be regal and adorned in a classical European style in jewel tones. The client wanted beautiful detailing and Donna Terry delivered- from the dainty flowers of the sheers that mimic the painted floral spray on the furniture to the custom carved music stand with the daughter’s initial- the room answered to the client’s every wish. The strong hues of claret and the prussian blue trims are soothed by the pastel tones of the plaid and large scale patterned wallpaper.
Donna provided drawings to scale for a custom designed area rug with butterflies that spanned two feet.
The walls surrounding the gas fireplace were wrapped in velvet using a French binding technique that makes seams nearly invisible when walls are upholstered. (To see another room with walls upholstered in blue damask using this same technique –click here)
Interior Design Project in the Boston area
This bedroom was part of a larger interior design project in a three-story townhouse in the Boston area and like almost the entire townhouse- we used tones of blue, taupe, and brown. The upholstered bed by Hickory chair was done in an oatmeal colored bouclee with a custom duvet and European shams in a prawn blue cotton and linen blend with contrasting tea brown banding.
In the detail image below, one can see the attention to detail in the correlation between the original piece of art work done in pastels created for this room and the nuance of color brought out by the texture of the fabrics.
The wall to wall patterned rug with a square motif in shades of taupe and musk brown visually extend the width and length of the room and pick-up on the large check pattern of the draperies that have similar color values to the bedding. The lamps with brown silk shades and blue green crackle vases round out the restful retreat.
